The International Energy Agency (IEA) sees energy efficiency as the first fuel of a sustainable global energy system. In a ministerial statement released following the IEA’s 8th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency, the critical role that energy efficiency can play in accelerating the clean energy transition toward reaching net zero emissions by 2050 was highlighted. This means ramping up annual energy efficiency progress from 2.2% today to over 4% annually by 2030. Ministers also encouraged the private sector to lead action on energy efficiency through innovation and investment, including development of digital solutions.
Published by the IEA, ahead of the Conference, Energy Efficiency: The Decade for Action, recommends tripling annual efficiency-related investment for an energy efficient future. Achieving the goal of doubling the rate of progress will require a tripling in annual efficiency-related investment, from USD 600 bn today to USD 1.8 trillion by the end of the decade.

Through innovation, the sharing of knowledge and insights, adoption of available energy-efficient technologies, smart investments and the right regulations and incentives, we can optimize energy efficiency and accelerate progress toward a decarbonized future for all.
The Movement promotes the use of energy-efficient solutions and technologies to save energy, reduce costs and draw down CO2 emissions. They serve as a “voice of industry” on energy efficiency, representing the private sector to investors, public sector decision-makers, academia, non-governmental organizations and civil society.
The Movement was launched by ABB and has received a positive reaction throughout industry, with hundreds of companies joining since its introduction in 2021.
