From enhancing quality inspections with AI to revolutionizing employee assistance, these success stories showcase the transformative impact of ABB Accelerator initiatives. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies and fostering collaboration, ABB continues to set new benchmarks in operational efficiency, digital infrastructure, and sustainable industrial processes.
As part of ABB’s June 2024 Accelerator, a groundbreaking AI-based solution was developed to improve quality inspection in one of our European manufacturing facilities within the Electrification Smart Power (ELSP) division.
This initiative focused on automating the visual inspection of TMAX circuit breakers on the production line, where detecting surface defects is essential to maintaining high product standards.Traditional inspection methods allowed only 19 seconds for manual checks, limiting accuracy and consistency. To address this, ABB teams developed a custom deep learning model and an intuitive web interface capable of identifying anomalies — such as scratches, dirt, or laser printing issues — in under 5 seconds, with explainable AI heatmaps to support operator decision-making.
The Accelerator prototype proved the potential of AI-powered quality control in a real-world production setting. By integrating a tailored computer vision system into the inspection process, the solution is expected to reduce the number of defective products reaching customers, thereby improving satisfaction and minimizing the environmental impact of returns. With scalability in mind, this approach is designed to extend across other lines and facilities within ABB’s global manufacturing network. The project reflects ABB’s commitment to operational excellence, innovation through collaboration, and building smarter, more sustainable industrial processes.
What began as a promising initiative in ABB’s March 2024 Accelerator has now grown into a globally deployed internal service that is transforming how ABB delivers and manages its digital infrastructure.
By adopting Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and Configuration as Code (CaC), ABB has automated the provisioning, configuration, and security of both cloud and on-premise environments. This platform now enables teams across the organization to deploy infrastructure rapidly, consistently, and securely — helping ABB stay ahead in an increasingly dynamic and digital world.
The real value of this transformation is seen by ABB’s customers. With infrastructure services now automated and delivered in a fraction of the time, ABB operates with greater speed, reliability, and flexibility. Automated recovery, security enforcement, and configuration consistency mean fewer errors, reduced downtime, and faster innovation. This evolution empowers ABB to be more agile in responding to customer needs, delivering cutting-edge solutions faster, and scaling services to match changing market conditions — all backed by a modern, efficient, and secure digital backbone.
As part of ABB’s Accelerator program, the AI Boost Conference has become a cornerstone event for advancing artificial intelligence across the organization.
Held multiple times each year, the conference brings together thousands of ABB employees and global technology leaders — including speakers from Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, McKinsey, and NVIDIA — to share the latest developments in AI and their practical application to industry. With a strong focus on real-world results, each edition of AI Boost offers sessions on topics ranging from predictive maintenance and digital twins to sustainability, smart factory technologies, and AI-powered employee tools.
By embedding this conference into the Accelerator program, ABB continually builds internal expertise, accelerates adoption of emerging technologies, and strengthens collaboration with world-class partners. This regular investment in learning and innovation directly benefits ABB’s customers — enabling faster delivery of advanced, AI-driven solutions that are more efficient, more sustainable, and better aligned to the evolving needs of modern industry. Whether it’s shortening time to market, improving product quality, or driving down operational costs, the insights and capabilities shared through AI Boost help ABB teams bring smarter, more impactful solutions to customers around the world.
In the fast-paced world of electrification, ABB has embraced the power of artificial intelligence with ABBY, an intelligent assistant designed to enhance employee productivity and streamline operations across the Electrification business area.
ABBY leverages advanced analytics and natural language processing to provide precise information and support to employees, enabling them to make informed decisions quickly. Unlike public AI interfaces, which only handle public and internal information, ABBY is equipped to process confidential data, ensuring that sensitive information is managed securely. With her ability to analyze complex queries and deliver relevant insights, ABBY plays a crucial role in supporting employees effectively.
By leveraging the ABB Accelerator, the team was able to complete numerous use cases for ABBY more quickly than would normally be possible. This accelerated development process allowed ABBY to rapidly enhance her capabilities and better serve the needs of employees. Additionally, ABBY capitalized on internal publicity to grow her user base and raise awareness of her platform's capabilities. Since her implementation, ABBY has significantly improved response times for employee inquiries, allowing teams to focus on their core tasks while she handles routine questions and information requests. Her integration with ABB's extensive knowledge base ensures that employees have access to the latest product information, technical specifications, and best practices. As a result, ABBY not only enhances operational efficiency but also contributes to a more engaged and informed workforce, positioning ABB as a leader in the electrification sector and setting a benchmark for AI-driven employee assistance in the industry.
In response to the maritime industry's shift toward cleaner port operations, ABB’s Accelerator program supported the development of the Shore-to-Ship (S2S) Configurator — a digital solution transforming how ABB prepares proposals for shore power for a standard system.
As global ports increasingly adopt shore-to-ship connections to reduce emissions, noise pollution, and reliance on onboard diesel generators, demand for customized, technically accurate proposals has surged. Yet, traditional bid preparation processes were manual and time-consuming, leading to delays, inconsistencies, and a slower response to customer needs. The S2S Configurator was created to change that.
This tool enables ABB to generate proposals up to three times faster than before, while maintaining high standards of technical accuracy and presentation. Customers benefit from quicker turnaround times, clearer documentation, and greater responsiveness — allowing them to move faster on critical infrastructure projects. By streamlining the early stages of the engagement process, the S2S Configurator helps customers make informed decisions with greater confidence, while reinforcing ABB’s commitment to delivering innovative, efficient, and sustainable solutions in the evolving maritime landscape.
