Brazil is classified among the Latin American and Caribbean countries by the International Energy Agency (IEA). In its 2023 World Energy Outlook, the IEA noted: “Half of the countries in LAC have pledged to achieve net zero emissions by mid-century or earlier.”
According to the IEA, renewable sources meet 45 percent of Brazil’s primary energy demand, making Brazil’s energy sector one of the least carbon-intensive in the world. Hydropower accounts for 80 percent of domestic electricity generation, although further expansion is limited by environmental sensitivities. Brazil is also a global leader in biofuels, helping diversify the power mix in the transport sector, thanks to a large market for flex-fuel cars.
Despite these strides in renewable energy, the country remains a net oil exporter, having discovered large offshore oil and gas reserves that make Brazil one of the world’s foremost oil and gas provinces.
In the links below, we highlight some of the projects supported by ABB that are helping Brazil's energy transition journey.
