Industrial processes are a large-scale contributor to global emissions, responsible for approximately 25 percent of all energy-related emissions, according to the IEA.
Optimizing these processes is critical for reducing emissions. The opportunities to decarbonize industry are wide-ranging and include high-efficiency powertrains for industrial applications like pumps, fans, conveyors and machine tools; electrification of heavy-duty vehicles and material-handling systems; emissions monitoring; helping data centers be less power-hungry; and carbon capture and storage.
Hard-to-abate sectors, such as metals, mining, cement and chemicals, are crucial to modern life but rely heavily on traditional high-carbon fuels and processes. The energy transition demands innovative solutions for these sectors’ production chains to optimize energy use and reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.
ABB is leading the charge in decarbonizing heavy industry, providing innovative solutions that reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and enhance operational performance.

Reducing the production of greenhouse gases is what the energy transition is all about. However, removing carbon directly from the air can play a useful role as well. CCS technologies capture carbon emissions from industrial processes, preventing them from entering the atmosphere. These captured emissions can then be utilized for various purposes or sequestered safely, often underground.
“Industry” isn’t just manufacturing. Today, data centers are vital engines of the digital economy. However, voracious and growing demand for computing and storage capacity means they also consume loads of energy. Smart power capabilities allow data centers to function optimally, consuming less energy while delivering needed services.
Methane poses a significant climate challenge. It traps 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide in the short term, accelerating global warming. New technologies and industry collaboration, however, offer exciting solutions to detect and eliminate methane emissions throughout the industrial sector.
