From concepts like eco-tourism to facilities with EV chargers, sustainability is becoming a key factor in choosing accommodations. The shift reflects a growing awareness of environmental responsibility in the hospitality industry. In a 2022 study, 78 percent of respondents indicated that they intended to book sustainable accommodation options at least once in the following year1.

 

More than a trend - a critical business decision

Sustainability in the hospitality industry is more than a trend - it’s a critical business factor. However, the hospitality sector faces a dual challenge: delivering exceptional guest experiences while minimizing its environmental impact. Hotels are among the most resource-intensive operations, requiring significant energy to maintain guest comfort.

For venue operators, the performance of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is critical to both operational expenditure and guest satisfaction. These systems can account for up to 60 percent of a venue's total energy consumption and are therefore prime targets for optimization.

ABB’s technologies address these challenges by empowering hotels and resorts worldwide to run leaner and cleaner, with innovative solutions that help redefine sustainable hospitality through energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.

 

Sustainable by design

ABB building automation solutions are supporting the hospitality industry with digital solutions designed to elevate guest comfort and streamline hotel operations for cost reduction and improved operational performance. 

For example, in a hotel, cooling or heating demand can vary throughout the day based on occupancy levels and outdoor temperatures. Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) can regulate the speed of fans and pumps to match the fluctuating demand, ensuring that power is only used when necessary and that HVAC systems do not consume excess energy during times of low demand. This dynamic adjustment can lead to a reduction in energy consumption of 25-40 percent, depending on the system and building design, resulting in significant energy cost savings.

Another example, the worldwide standard for home and building automation, KNX, enables all devices to communicate with one another via a single bus cable, streamlining all electrical functions that are connected for easier management and control. The operational flexibility of an ABB i-bus® KNX electrical installation includes components ranging from lighting, shading, and temperature control to energy management. Installing a KNX system can lead to a reduction in energy consumption from lighting and room heating control by up to 40 percent3

Some examples of how we’re supporting the industry worldwide to run leaner and cleaner include:


Innovation platform Living Tomorrow used ABB’s energy efficient technology in their Brussels campus. The latest digital and automated solutions give guests control over their environment with the touch of a button and building operators increased visibility to energy use and emissions. The campus offers eight state-of-the-art meeting rooms, a hotel with 92 guest rooms, an auditorium, two restaurants and a digital experience center.


ABB has provided solutions to two leading hotels, both focused on improving sustainability in their operations. At the four-star Le Fucine hotel in Buttrio, we have collaborated with owners, the Danieli Group, to integrate technology that increases both guests’ comfort and the hotel’s energy efficiency. Further south, in Tuscany, the ADLER resort hotel has also turned to ABB to renovate their electrical systems. The ABB Ability™ Energy and Asset Manager platform was implemented to allow real-time energy consumption monitoring.

At the InterContinental Hotel in Madrid, ABB’s drives and high efficient motors  have reduced energy consumption by 40 percent, showcasing how smart building technology can revolutionize sustainability in hospitality.


The Panorama Landscape Hotel offers guests a luxurious escape with its unique landscape suites, forest spa, and fine dining. Behind its serene ambiance, ABB’s advanced building automation solutions ensure seamless adaptability to guest needs via intuitive touchscreens while optimizing energy efficiency in lighting, heating, and cooling - blending rural luxury with cutting-edge sustainability.

The Dolder Grand pairs its renowned luxury with innovative energy efficiency and power protection, supported by ABB’s uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. In the event of power failure, ABB's UPS ensures emergency lighting and systems remain operational while significantly enhancing energy efficiency and saving approximately 13,500 kWh annually. ABB has also integrated smart building technology into a historic thermal spa, merging wellness traditions with modern energy-efficient solutions. This initiative enhances guest comfort while reducing environmental impact, embodying sustainable hospitality.


The ID Bodrum project on Turkey’s scenic Bodrum peninsula integrates ABB’s smart building solutions. With ABB’s i-bus® KNX and Cylon® HVAC automation, the buildings achieve enhanced energy monitoring, reduced utility costs, and seamless automation, combining elevated comfort with sustainable innovation.


ABB’s advanced KNX building automation technology powers the energy-efficient operation of glass igloos in Lapland and Greenland, ensuring seamless performance even in extreme weather conditions. Residents can easily control lighting, ventilation, and power settings to conserve energy, while hotel staff can remotely manage and adapt systems during vacancies, optimizing efficiency and reducing manual intervention. 


Amanbagh, a resort nestled in the Aravalli Mountain range of Rajasthan installed more than 50 ABB drives on the air handling units and pumps of the resort’s HVAC system. When compared to the conventional damper or valve control solution, drives can adjust the motor speed of fans or pumps to meet the current building needs, thus smartly saving a lot of energy. This way, the resort was able to save around 30 percent of its energy annually.


Located in the heart of Bangkok, the Unicorn Phayathai is designed to provide a multifunctional hub for work, leisure, and mobility.  The building uses  ABB Ability™ Energy and Asset Manager, ABB Motor Control Center technology and ABB’s Terra electric vehicle charging systems. ABB Ability™ Energy and Asset Manager provides real-time insights to optimize energy consumption and reduce operational costs by up to 40 percent. 


The Four Seasons in Doha has ambitious sustainability targets and reached out to ABB for support. The upgrade works included the replacement of 20 air circuit breakers with ABB’s Emax 2 smart circuit breakers, retrofitted five Ekip UP retrofit devices and connecting the substation to the ABB AbilityTM Energy & Asset Manager. By improving overall performance, the solution can save up to 20 percent on energy bills; 40 percent on maintenance costs; and 30 percent on operational costs.
