Sustainability organization and governance

As part of its overall responsibility for the company’s strategy and targets, ABB’s Board of Directors also oversees the company’s sustainability strategy, and monitors progress and target achievements. Sustainability will specifically be added to the responsibilities of the Board’s Governance and Nomination Committee, while the Compensation Committee will ensure that ABB remuneration policies are linked to the achievement of its sustainability targets.

The ABB Sustainability Board, comprising the Group Executive Committee, is the operational body to oversee sustainability policies and programs, review developments, and monitor progress towards our targets on an annual basis.

The ABB Sustainability and HSE (health, safety & environment) & Security functions are responsible for the development and coordination of the Group-wide policies and programs covering health and safety, environment and corporate responsibility. These functions report directly to the Chief Communications Officer, who is also a member of the Executive Committee.

A network of sustainability specialists worldwide reports to each of the Business Areas and supports the Sustainability and HSE & Security functions.

All regions in which ABB operates have health, safety, environment and  security advisors or managers. The country and regional specialists are supported by sustainability officers and health and safety advisors.

Overall, the sustainability network is supported by a team of some 600 employees, full-time and part-time, at headquarters and around the world.

A new sustainability governance framework is being designed and will be operational by early 2021. The framework will take account of the new ABB Way operating model across the company’s four Business Areas, and support the implementation of our 2030 sustainability ambition.
