While the minerals and materials made available by mining, such as copper and lithium, are increasingly essential not only to equip the world with everyday items like computers, smart phones, batteries or even electric motors, but they are also the key ingredients for a decarbonized future. Yet the mining industry is under increasing pressure to improve its green credentials, being currently responsible for up to seven percent of global greenhouse gas emissions1. To reduce emissions, mining companies are turning to the key enablers of decarbonization – electrification, automation and digitalization.
To help the mining industry decarbonize, ABB Ability™ eMine is a framework of methods and integrated electrification and digital solutions covering the entire mining process from pit to port to help convert existing mining operations from fossil fuel to all-electric energy.
As a point of reference, electrifying every truck in every mine could remove 198,000 tons of CO2 every day from the air. One solution from the eMine offering is the ABB eMine™ Trolley System. Like a tram or a bus in a city, hauling trucks within the mine run on an electric trolley line and can thus reduce diesel consumption by up to 90 percent, significantly lowering energy costs and environmental impact. The system is currently helping to reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent at a mine site in Canada.
ABB is also piloting eMine™ FastCharge, which is today the world’s fastest and only fully automated charging system for mining trucks. This flexible solution is designed for the harshest environments, can be installed anywhere and can charge any electric truck without human intervention at up to 600kW, the highest power available on today’s market to minimize the downtime of mobile assets. The rugged solution concept is based on a modular design, is future ready and thus can be extended to accommodate higher charging powers in the near future.
These solutions can then be integrated with the ABB digital and automation systems to get critical data, such as energy consumption, available power, health of the equipment, mine operations visibility, and allow for real-time scheduling and tracking of operations. By analyzing this data, mine operators can easily monitor and optimize energy usage in real time.
