Latest figures show that air pollution is 3.5 times higher on average inside a building compared to outside1, with the World Health Organization citing the issue as “the world’s largest single environmental health risk.”2 Adequate and appropriate ventilation is key to improving Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and reducing exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs - chemicals that can emit from paint, furnisher or office equipment). Ventilation contributes towards a healthy environment and protects the health of building occupants. Poor air quality can cause headaches, throat and eye irritations, lack of concentration and decreased productivity, with VOCs being linked to ‘sick building syndrome’.
In addition, health authorities such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States and industry organizations have published guidelines for air quality and circulation to address COVID-19 concerns. These guidelines cover temperature, humidity control recommendations in addition to fresh air and air purging strategies.
ABB’s FusionAir Smart Sensor helps to address the growing concerns on indoor air quality and promotes healthy, safe and comfortable environments for users. The FusionAir Smart Sensor is a touch free room sensor capable of monitoring temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2) and VOC levels to improve the overall IAQ. The sensor features optional touch free control via an App for temperature adjustment, HVAC, lighting, and sun blind control for occupants.
When connected to ABB’s scalable building energy management and control solution ABB Cylon® ASPECT®, FusionAir sensors can help address ongoing IAQ and health measures. For example, office space or classrooms can be pre-purged according to industry and government guidelines, ensuring the temperature and humidity is optimal, overall indoor air quality is as safe as possible and optionally, the lighting and sun shading are adjusted. Room status is displayed via easy-to-see programmable multi-color indicators. When space is occupied, air safety levels are continuously checked and the sensor informs the building management system to take remedial action if required. When the room is vacated, the system initiates an automatic purging of the air in the room through accelerated air exchange, making it ready for the next occupants.
The accompanying Bluetooth enabled phone application enables room occupants to adjust settings touch free, providing yet another level of safety.
