Reliable operation is a key priority for any manufacturing process. Provided and overseen by ABB Motion Services, ABB Ability™ digital solutions enable operators to remotely monitor rotating equipment like motors, generators and drives, resulting in fewer on-site inspections and reducing the risks of costly repairs and operations disruption.
The digital solution, ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring, for example, enables full transparency on all parameters of electrical motion equipment, often placed in locations that may be difficult or dangerous to reach, such as a refinery. With critical and always up-to-date data at hand, operators can anticipate potential equipment failure remotely, minimizing operation disruption, while also reducing the number of maintenance teams working in hazardous environments.
As one example, ABB Motion Services was able to help the refinery Xianglu Petrochemicals Zhangzhou, one of China’s biggest petrochemical plants, save $150,000 in potential waste damage, as well as additional costs of stopped production. The refinery, which produces benzenes, liquefied petroleum gases, and other products, is equipped with three ABB variable speed drives that together with ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring, play a key role in stirring petrochemical materials.
The downtime of the refinery drives cannot exceed more than 24 hours, before the raw material in the mixer solidifies and the wasted product must be cleared manually, and the mixer cleaned before production can resume.
By analyzing the data delivered with the ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring solution ABB experts were able to locate a faulty drive that tripped due to a power outage. ABB Service personnel quickly identified and sourced the parts needed to get the process operating again and after four hours the drive was back in operation.
