Over the course of three decades, Azipod® electric propulsion has evolved to meet varied and ever-changing needs of the marine industry, bringing higher performance for all kinds of ships.
Azipod® propulsion is available in power ranges from 1MW to 22MW, making it suitable for smaller crafts, ferries, cruise ships, cargo carriers and icebreakers capable of independently operating in the harshest conditions. To date, ABB has sold over 700 Azipod® units.
Azipod® propulsion’s success is due to a simple, yet highly robust design. With the electric drive motor housed within a pod outside the ship hull, the Azipod® system can rotate 360 degrees, significantly increasing maneuverability and operating efficiency of a vessel, while cutting fuel consumption by up to 20 percent compared to conventional shaftline systems. The space saved by placing the motor outside the ship frees up space for cabins or other features. Additionally, the Azipod® system can be powered by any electrical energy source, including batteries and fuel cells, and is designed to be adaptable even to energy sources that have yet to be discovered.
