IE5 SynRM Increased Safety motors

IE5 SynRM Increased Safety motors

Did you know…
…ABB has created the world’s first IE5 ultra-premium efficiency electric motor for explosive environments?

ABB has achieved a significant world-first by bringing the benefits of IE5 ultra-premium efficiency to electric motors in the hazardous area sector.

ABB’s award-winning Synchronous reluctance (SynRM) electric motors deliver the highest efficiency of any current design. With SynRM motors, ABB has created a new energy efficiency standard beyond that required by any current legislation or certification. Generally speaking, IE5 motors have 20 percent lower losses compared to an IE4 motor.  The SynRM is characterized not only by its high energy efficiency but also by its reliability and low maintenance needs. With an environmentally friendly design, the motors don’t contain magnets or rare earth metals and help to reduce emissions.

IE5 efficiency is now available to keep people and equipment safe in hazardous industrial environments where an explosive atmosphere could form, such as chemicals, food and beverage, oil and gas, pulp and paper, and pharmaceuticals. Ensuring the safety of electrical machinery is paramount in such atmospheres as airborne gas, dust or vapors are potentially highly volatile. To guarantee safe working environments in the presence of such hazards, equipment must conform to international standards. The new SynRM model is manufactured in two versions – Increased Safety and Dust ignition proof. Increased Safety motors are designed to not develop hot surfaces and sparking during normal operation, ensuring a safer environment. Dust ignition proof motors feature special seals that prevent dust from entering the enclosure, enhancing their reliability in dusty conditions.

Efficiency is quickly demonstrated in terms of the total cost of ownership (TCO) and significant reductions in CO2 emissions, that will continue throughout the motor’s long service life.

Key facts:

  • Up to 40 percent lower energy losses compared to IE3 induction motors
  • Ensures safety of people and equipment in hazardous industrial environments
  • Ideal motors for pumps, fans and compressors
