As a global technology leader ABB develops and manufactures complex electrical systems powering windmills, trains and vehicles of any kind. But the story doesn’t stop there. ABB also undertakes efforts to improve these systems, optimizing their efficiency and performance through rigorous hands-on testing. Hence ABB maintains a test system business which specializes in testing drive solutions for the automotive and railroad industry as well as for the megawatt sector with wind power applications and wind tunnels. The outcome of this testing provides valuable real-world measurements, data and feedback.
ABB’s development test benches provide important insights on specific system performance by simulating real conditions as part of the manufacturer's R&D. A typical test bench combines an electrical system comprised of frequency converters and electric motors, along with necessary mechanics and an automation system.
For example, in the fast-growing electric car industry and in the research centers of railway equipment manufacturers, many ABB test stands are used to test the drive train - the combination of frequency converter, electric motor, gearbox and axles - or individual components before they go into serial production. In this way, performance can be ensured and improved over the entire development process of a transmission.
A test stand solution can be housed and delivered ready for use in a container. This has the lowest impact on the customer’s operation.
