The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is about bringing the thrill of all-electric racing to as many people as we can, on city-center circuits around the world. But more than that, it is a showcase for how smart technology and solutions can help optimize, electrify and decarbonize in the global race for the energy transition.
As the championship advances from Mexico to London, we will highlight initiatives from ABB and its partners which will help them on their journey to a lower-carbon future across the power, industry, transport and building sectors.
ABB in the United Kingdom has a dynamic presence across multiple industrial sectors.
With around 1750 employees, collaborating to supply in the region of £0.5bn annually of innovative solutions, products and services, ABB was this year recognized as a top UK employer for the fourth consecutive year.
Like many neighboring European countries, the UK is engaged in transitioning its economy to become less reliant on fossil fuels for energy supply and has a legal target to achieve net zero by 2050.
An example of ABB’s commitment to its UK business came with the announcement of a $35m investment in a greenfield manufacturing and R&D facility which will manufacture earthing and lightning protection.
Due to open in 2025, the 9,500m2 facility will be constructed in line with the BREEAM Excellent rating for sustainable building standards and include efficient equipment and technology, photovoltaic rooftop cells, electric vehicle charging stations, and processes centered on reducing waste and energy.
Ahead of this weekend’s London E-Prix, which showcases advances in electric mobility, we explore how ABB technology and solutions in the UK are helping an innovative startup realize its vision for sustainable housing; how we are partnering with Imperial College London on a unique carbon-capture training facility and how a 500-year old former royal residence in Edinburgh is now a showcase for energy efficiency.
