Over 600 million people worldwide live in coastal areas that are at risk of flooding. Finding new solutions to shield cities and people from threatening waters has become critical as sea levels rise and put pressure on existing prevention systems.
One example of the latest technology being used for flood prevention is the Venice MoSE system. For centuries, Venice has faced the risk of acqua alta, high tides, that threaten to submerge the city.
Venice’s innovative MoSE flood barrier system features 78 independently operated hollow steel barriers that are lifted whenever high waters approach the lagoon. MoSE stands for Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico, or “Experimental Electromechanical Module.” When not in use, the gates are filled with water and lie flat and invisible on the sea bed. When they are needed, the water inside is pumped out with compressed air, and the gates lift into position aided by their own buoyancy. The barrier is also flexible. With independently operated gates, the MO.S.E. flood barrier has been designed to meet all eventualities.
The entire barrier system can be deployed in 30 minutes, isolating the lagoon and protecting the historic city from tides as high as three meters.
