Trains

Discover more
With a growing number of transportation kilometers each year as well as a greater number of convenience functions within the trains, Rhaetian Railway’s energy consumption is increasing.

RhB significantly reduces this increase with energy saving measures. RhB is equipped with ABB traction converters of the highest standards. This technology enables an energy-efficient operation of the train and assures on top the recovery of braking energy, which can in turn be used again for acceleration. This way, RhB can save a significant amount of Energy, which is equivalent to the yearly energy usage of 200 family households.

ABB technologies within trains

ABB technologies aren’t just part of the Rhaetian Railway – they can be found in trains around the world. And they power the trains, ensure safe operation and enhance passenger comfort – so you can travel from A to B as efficiently as possible.

Traction converters at a glance

Traction converters from ABB take energy from the source (catenary line, diesel generator, energy storage) and use it to efficiently power the traction motors. The energy that is recuperated from braking can be fed back into the catenary line, transferred to storage systems or used for comfort systems (HVAC, lighting, etc.).

ABB supplies SBB with the latest generation of traction converters for the modernization of their fleet of the type Re 460, enabling them to save up to 30 gigawatt-hours per year.

Energy storage system at a glance

The energy storage system can be used as an environmentally friendly alternative or as an intelligent way to supplement diesel drive operation. It enables operators to store and reuse the energy recuperated from the braking process.

ABB is making energy storage systems for railways, e-buses/trolleybuses and e-trucks at their production facility in Baden.

Traction motors at a glance

The electric motor works in tandem with the traction converter and energy storage system to propel the train. Together, they form the drive on an electrically powered rail vehicle.

The city of Gorzów in Poland has upgraded its tram network with modern, low-floor vehicles, providing a fast, comfortable and environment-friendly public transport system. The new trams are powered by ABB motors.
